From 24 to 28 August 2026, the HELIOS team took part in the 28th International Conference-School “Advanced Materials and Technologies” (AMT 2026) at Hotel Gabija in Palanga, Lithuania. The conference-school is organised by Kaunas University of Technology together with Vilnius University, Riga Technical University, the University of Latvia, the Center for Physical Sciences and Technology, the University of Southern Denmark and the University of Tartu, and is aimed in particular at young researchers and PhD students in materials science and condensed matter physics.
The HELIOS project coordinator, Professor Iryna Yaremchuk, together with the project team, presented the project in Palanga.
Two HELIOS sessions in the official programme
Unusually for a conference of this kind, HELIOS was not only present in the audience — the project had two dedicated working meetings built into the official schedule:
Monday, 24 August, 15:00–17:00 — Meeting of the project “Research and Innovation Strategy for Lviv Polytechnic National University dedicated to White-Emitting Organic Lighting Systems (HELIOS)”, chaired by Dr Dmytro Volyniuk (Kaunas University of Technology)
Wednesday, 26 August, 15:00–18:00 — second session of the same project meeting, again chaired by Dr Dmytro Volyniuk
Five hours of dedicated consortium time, with the Lviv Polytechnic and Kaunas teams in the same room, is the kind of working contact that a twinning project depends on and that is difficult to replicate online. HELIOS shared this format with two other Horizon Europe projects meeting at AMT 2026, TETRANET and SENS4CORN, a reminder of how far the conference-school has become a meeting point for EU-funded materials research in the Baltic region.
A programme close to the project’s own science
The lecture programme spanned quantum technologies, electron microscopy, plasmonics, energy storage and bioactive glasses, but several sessions sat squarely in HELIOS territory:
Arvydas Ruseckas (University of St Andrews, UK) — Upcycling Triplet Excitons in OLEDs and Lasers
Dovydas Banevičius (Vilnius University) — Turning Light into Technology: Organic Materials in OLEDs and Upconversion
Karolis Leitonas (Kaunas University of Technology) — Influence of Carbazole-Based Host Engineering on TADF Emission Properties
Tomas Tamulevičius (Kaunas University of Technology) — Self-Assembled Plasmonic Nanostructures and Their Applications
Triplet-exciton management, TADF emitters and host engineering are precisely the levers HELIOS is using to build efficient, colour-stable white OLEDs, so the exchange in Palanga fed directly into the project’s research agenda.
The week also included a poster session with voting for the best poster on 27 August, and a social programme — a 3×3 basketball tournament and an orienteering competition — that did as much for the consortium’s working relationships as the formal sessions.

Why it matters for HELIOS
HELIOS is a twinning project: alongside the science, its purpose is to embed Lviv Polytechnic National University in the European research community and to build lasting links with leading partners. A week in Palanga — two working meetings, a programme of talks on organic optoelectronics, and direct contact with research groups from the UK, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Denmark and beyond — advances that objective as directly as any publication.
