We are pleased to share the second issue of the HELIOS Monthly Review of Grant Proposals – our regular digest designed to help researchers, universities, and innovators stay on top of the most relevant European funding opportunities.
Issue №2 (May 2026) presents 9 carefully selected calls across three major programmes: Horizon Europe, the EIC Pathfinder Challenges, and the European Research Council. This edition has a strong focus on advanced materials, photonics, energy-efficient technologies, frontier research in AI, biotechnology, and individual researcher mobility – areas closely aligned with the mission of the HELIOS project and the broader scientific community it serves.
What you will find in Issue №2 (May 2026):
MSCA Doctoral Networks 2026 (HORIZON-MSCA-2026-DN-01) – funding for international doctoral training consortia based on the “Triple i” principles: inter-sectoral, inter-disciplinary, and international. Includes separate tracks for Industrial and Joint Doctorates. Deadline: 24 November 2026.
Advanced Integrated Photonic Devices for Extended Features and Ultra-Low Power Consumption (RIA) (HORIZON-CL4-2027-05-DIGITAL-EMERGING-03) – support for next-generation integrated photonic devices with breakthrough energy efficiency, targeting TRL 2–5. Relevant to energy-efficient light sources, sensors, and data transmission. Deadline: 18 March 2027.
Circular Innovative Advanced Materials: Facilitating the Transition from Design to Markets (RIA) (HORIZON-CL4-2027-01-MAT-PROD-06) – aimed at developing “circular by design” materials for strategic EU sectors including energy, electronics, and construction, minimising critical raw material use and ensuring recyclability. Deadline: 2 February 2027.
Fast Track to Innovation for Breakthroughs in the Chemical Industry Action Plan (RIA) (HORIZON-CL4-2027-01-MAT-PROD-62) – supports radical innovation in chemical synthesis and processing, focusing on decarbonisation, waste minimisation, and the substitution of hazardous substances with safe alternatives. Deadline: 2 February 2027.
Biotechnology for Healthy Ageing (HORIZON-EIC-2026-PATHFINDERCHALLENGES-01-02) – high-risk, high-gain research (TRL 1–4) translating decades of ageing biology into tangible biotechnology-based solutions: therapeutic interventions targeting molecular processes of ageing, biomarker-based tools, or non-animal methods (NAMs) to model ageing. Active portfolio management by EIC programme managers. Deadline: 28 October 2026.
DeepRAP: Deep Reasoning, Abstraction & Planning towards Trustworthy Cognitive AI Systems (HORIZON-EIC-2026-PATHFINDERCHALLENGES-01) – breakthrough research to push AI systems beyond current pattern-recognition limitations through novel neuro-symbolic and hybrid architectures capable of causal reasoning, transfer learning, and adaptive planning, with full alignment to EU AI Act standards. Deadline: 28 October 2026.
Advanced Materials for Miniaturised Energy Harvesting Systems (HORIZON-EIC-2026-PATHFINDERCHALLENGES-01) – development of a new generation of advanced materials for miniaturised energy-harvesting modules – such as solar cells, thermoelectric generators, or piezoelectric devices – integrated into energetically autonomous systems such as IoT devices, reaching TRL 4. Deadline: 28 October 2026.
MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships 2026 (HORIZON-MSCA-2026-PF-01) – supports experienced researchers (PhD holders) in implementing their own research project at a foreign institution. Divided into European Fellowships (within Europe) and Global Fellowships (outside Europe with mandatory return). The grant covers 100% of salary, mobility, research, training, and networking costs. Deadline: 9 September 2026.
ERC Proof of Concept Grants 2026 (ERC-2026-POC) – designed exclusively for active or recently completed ERC grant holders to verify the innovation potential of ideas arising from their main project. The fixed grant of €150,000 can be used for technical validation, IP protection, market analysis, partner search, or commercialisation strategy development. Deadline: 17 September 2026.
Each entry in this digest includes a concise description of the call’s objectives, the relevant programme identifier, and the submission deadline – giving readers everything they need to assess quickly whether a call fits their research profile and timelines.
The HELIOS Monthly Review is part of our ongoing commitment to knowledge dissemination and capacity building within the European Research Area. We will continue publishing it each month to keep our partners, affiliated researchers, and the wider scientific community informed of the most relevant open calls.
